2017 Isadora Duncan "Izzie" Award Winner for BEST DANCE/MUSIC/TEXT!
“If dance provides Open Love Letter’s muscle, then the written word provides the piece’s backbone. The language herein snakes like a curved spine. These poems hold together age-old conflicts in a contemporary, freshly legible way. And, they are crafted to break – like promises, like the human will under stress, like cycles of violence.” -Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Chief of Program & Pedagogy Yerba Buena Center for the Arts |
An Open Love Letter to Black Fathers: A Choreopoem reveals deeply moving relationships between father-daughter pairs. Themes of addiction, sexual violence and incarceration are explored in tandem with healing, forgiveness and unconditional love. With bold poetic language, gestural movement and original song, Open Love Letter reminds us that the way we frame our experiences of trauma can condemn and destroy us, or liberate and empower us.
Open Love Letter is docu-fiction. It is crafted around the narratives of 8 women who were interviewed for this project. |
Optional Writing Workshops for youth (13-17) and adults. These highly engaging workshops are crafted to instigate healing and forge stronger relationships to ourselves and each other. Using unique and inspiring creative writing techniques, workshop topics include “Hard Conversations”, “My Medicine Bag”, “Identity, Labels & Legacy” and "Breaking Cycles". |
